Tripura Government Forms Script Selection Committee for Kokborok Language Development

Agartala, June 27, 2023 – The Government of Tripura has constituted a Script Selection Committee for the development of the Kokborok language under the Tribal Research and Cultural Institute, Tribal Welfare Department. The committee aims to evaluate and recommend the most suitable script for Kokborok, ensuring its preservation and growth within the community.
As per the official notification issued by the state government, the committee consists of three members:
1. Dr. Atul Debbarma, Ex-MLA (Convener)
2. Shri Biralal Tripura, Headmaster, Dhumacherra School, Ambassa (Member)
3. Shri Dhirendra Kaloi, Ex-Tripura State Government Employee (Member)
Committee's Role and Responsibilities: The committee is tasked with evaluating and selecting a script that will best serve the needs of the Kokborok-speaking community. It will submit a detailed report and recommendations to the Hon’ble Minister of Tribal Welfare for government consideration. Additionally, the convener is responsible for holding regular meetings to ensure active participation by all members. The government has instructed that the committee's work should commence immediately.
The formation of this committee marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing debates regarding the script for Kokborok. The language is currently written in both Bengali and Roman scripts, and there have been demands for a standardized script to enhance its growth and formal recognition.
This initiative reflects the government's commitment to the cultural and linguistic development of indigenous communities in Tripura. The recommendations of the committee will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Kokborok language in education, administration, and public life.
