Shubhadip, this hit hard. The old man's story and your friend's story, placed side by side, say something we all sense but rarely say out loud. That we've gotten so good at building careers and bank balances that we've quietly stopped practicing presence. The line about Samarpan stayed with me the longest. "This moment is not about me." That's such a simple sentence, but it asks for everything. What you did for your friend, stepping in for the Mukhagni when blood relations hesitated, is not a small thing. That's Dharma in its rawest form, the kind that doesn't wait for permission or precedent. I think about my own father often, and how much of what he gave us was never counted or asked back. Reading this made me want to call my own children today, not for any reason, just to be a voice on the other end of the phone before it becomes the only thing left. Beautifully written. Thank you for putting words to something most of us feel but never articulate.
