Free ration to Reang refugee camps to be stopped from January 15

By Our Correspondent

Agartala, January 9 2019: The central government has decided to stop free supply of ration to the over 35 thousand Reang refugees came from Mizoram 22 years ago and residing in six camps in Kanchanpur and Pani Sagar sub-divisions of North Tripura District.

Abhedananda Baidya, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Kanchanpur admitted that they have received instructions from central government to discontinue free ration to the refugee camps w.e.f January 15 and the administration also preparing to with draw its ration distribution office from January 16.

The distribution of free relief was stopped first time from November 1 after the refugees refused to return to their ancestral home at Mizoram following a four corner agreement. Apart from the refugee representatives, other signatories in the agreement were the governments of Mizoram and Tripura and the union home ministry.

The decision of the refugees surprised many as the agreement has offered a lucrative rehabilitation package but the refugees remained adamant forcing the central government to take a tough stand.

After three weeks on November 22 the education minister of Tripura Ratan Lal Nath visited the camps and announced the resumption of free ration on 'humanitarian' ground.

It was widely seen as a political move as by the time the Election Commission has announced the date for election of Mizoram State Assembly and the Reangs are the voters of that state. However, it seems to have not paid any dividend to the BJP as the party could not win any of the six Reang dominated constituencies.
