Five co-operative societies of Tripura win award for excellence in performance

Agartala January 10,2019 : Co-operative movement, an effective means of neutralizing the increasing unemployment problem across the country seems to be gaining ground in Tripura. In post-independence period co-operative movement achieved major success in the states of Gujrat and Maharashtra-so much so that politics in these two states revolve round the surfeit of co-operatives and large number of members and office bearers who run them. 'Amul' in Gujrat possibly best  epitomizes the success of the co-operative movement in the country. In Tripura the co-operative movement had really taken off since the late seventies when a plethora of societies under various banners were launched .But after a long time and in certain cases after loss of endeavour and resources the movement seems to be moving forward.

This is illustrated by the recent awards conferred on five co-operatives in the state by the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC). A press note issued by the information department said that recently the Registrar of co-operative societies in the state had been informed of the conferment of five awards for excellence in performance on as many co-operative societies. The press note said that the regional director of NCDC had informed the state Registrar that the five awards had been given in three categories. Among them , the 'Pragati PACS' in Madhya Bhubonban area near Agartala has been conferred the 'excellence award' as the best Primary Credit Co-operative Society while the second prize in this category has gone to 'Netaji PACS' in Belonia under south Tripura district. The award for best primary marketing co-operative society has gone to Kumarghat Primary Marketing Co-operative Society while the second best award has been conferred on Primary Marketing Co-operative Society of Udaipur. The women of the state also do not lag behind in running successful co-operatives as the Popular Women Co-operative Credit and Thrift Society, an exclusively women-run society of Udaipur in Gomati district has won the best women-run co-operative in the state.

The press note said that the first prize winner co-operatives will be given Rs 25 thousand each while the second prize will be the cash award of Rs 20 thousand each. All the prizes will be given away in a special function to be organized by the Registrar of co-operative societies of the state at Agartala.
