Congress preparing for a determined fight for the Badharghat (SC) assembly by-poll

By Our Correspondent

Agartala September 10 ,2019 : Having already filed three successive complaints to the election commission against alleged violation of poll code of conduct by the ruling BJP, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is trying to put up a strong electoral challenge to the ruling party in the upcoming by-election to the Badharghat (SC) assembly by-poll slated to come off on September 23. The TPCC president Pradyot Kishore  has already constituted two election committees for looking after all aspects of the upcoming elections. While former PCC president and five-time MLA Birajit Sinha has been appointed as state chief of the election committee, former MLA Subal Bhowmik who joined Congress before the loksabha elections by parting ways with the BJP has been put in charge of campaign for the upcoming by-election where he will oversee the campaign and poll preparation of the party in 7 Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) wards that encompass the constituency. Both Subal Bhowmik and veteran leader Tapas De have been put in charge of preparations for the election to the civic bodies including AMC across the state towards the end of next year as conveners.

Birajit Sinha, Subal Bowmik and PCC president Pradyot Kishore will take part in door-to-door campaign in the by-election by turns and will also address street corner meetings . The PCC president Pradyot Kishore will also address a number of street corner meetings as part of the campaign. Veteran party leader and former PCC president Gopal Roy has also been commissioned as one of the leading campaigners in the by-election.

Speaking to former MLA Tapas De said that three consecutive complaints with specific details of irregularities committed by the ruling BJP have been sent to the election commission of India . "We pointed out with names of clubs and polling booth numbers and areas  where the BJP distributed sports kits and items free of cost among the young voters on September 7 in brazen violation of poll code and other irregularities but the ECI is yet to respond positively to the complaints; we will also urge upon the ECI to deploy central paramilitary forces to provide security to the voters on the polling day because the BJP will try to prevent voters from coming to the polling booths and casting ballots like they did in the Panchayat elections ; we have informed the ECI in detail how the entire Panchayat election was reduced to a farce" said Tapas De.

He expressed the hope that despite odds, Congress candidate Ratan Das will perform very well in the by-election. "Basically this was our seat and there is deep resentment among people over denial of nomination to anyone from late MLA Dilip Sarkar's family , specially in the large area where Dilip's ancestral home is ; moreover the greenhorn BJP candidate Mimi Majumber Das lacks acceptability even among BJP supporters and voters and she was earlier a well-known CPI (M) worker ; the CPI (M) candidate will not be able to make much of an impact and that is why we stand a fair chance in the by-election" said Tapas De.
