Congress leaders meet ECI, submit memo for re-polls

Agartala, April 14, 2019: Tripura Pradesh Congress leaders  along with leaders of AICC's legal cell has submitted a memorandum before the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi on Saturday requesting re-poll in above hundreds of polling booths of West Tripura seat, were elections held in on April 11 last.

The Congress delegation led by vice president of Tripura Pradesh Congress, Pijush Kanti Biswas with candidate of the party for West Tripura seat Subal Bhowmik met the ECI team and said that the BJP workers have prevented their and other opposition parties' polling agents to enter into the hundreds of polling stations and prevented thousands of voters to cast their votes in a large number of places across the West Tripura constituency during the first phase of elections on April 11.

They also urged the ECI to verify all CCTV footage and web casting cameras, which were installed inside polling stations to ensure their complaints. The Congress also demanded removal of both Director General of Police (DGP) Akhil Kumar Shukla and Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Tripura  Sriram Taranikanti for their alleged total failure to hold the elections and freely and fairly.

Biswas said that they urged the ECI to hold the re-poll in at least in 151 polling stations, where polling was totally rigged and they have submitted details of their claims.

However, ahead of second phase elections for East Tripura seat, hundreds of IPFT supporters on Saturday joined Congress during a programme held at royal palace in presence of PCC president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

Speaking with media persons, PCC president said large number of IFPT leaders and supporters are joining Congress as they feel the IPFT leadership has betrayed them. He also said that people in Tripura are fed up with misrule of BJP at the Centre and in the state also. He hoped that people of Tripura will give them suitable reply and vote against BJP by defeating all kinds of fear and intimidation.

He appealed to the people to exercise their voting rights without fearing hooliganism of BJP and form a Congress government in centre.
