Assault on doctor: growing lawlessness gripping state ?

By Our Correspondent

Agartala, April 14, 2019 : The assault on Dr Dipankar Debnath in IGM hospital  by legitimately angered relatives of a young woman in advanced stage of pregnancy who died due to medical negligence has yet again brought to the fore a seemingly growing lawlessness in the state.  During the past one year altogether  six hundred complaints have been filed with the police and hospital authority  against relatives of patients who died due to alleged medical negligence and also against doctors . But out of this only fourteen specific cases were registered with the police . But there has been no arrest by police as yet.

Apart from this , altogether fourteen journalists have also been assaulted either by security forces or political workers but there has been no arrest. Besides, recently an advocate of Khowai court Nantu Ranjan Das has been assaulted in Ramchandraghat area because of inner party bickerings of ruling BJP. Again no arrest.

But the most shameful incident happened on April 07, 2019 in Vidyasagar area under Jogendra Nagar in southeastern Agartala. Tripura’s octogenarian intellectual  and nationally awarded author Agni Kumar Acharjee was manhandled by a group of BJP supporters simply because he had raised the boundary wall of his house . As the news spread many eminent citizens of the state including retired high court judges visited his home and the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and DGP A.K.Shukla also spoke to him over phone to convey sympathy but precious little has been done so far. There has been no arrest of the culprits who are roaming free with inflated chest .

The assault on Dr Dipankar Debnath has also spawned significant questions : Do the doctors actually perform duties with the desired level of sincerity and how can the patients expect service from them ? As things are coming to light , there are lot of allegations against Dr Dipankar Debnath for callousness and foul manners with patients. The need of the hour is a high level and intensive inquiry into what happened in the maternity ward of IGM hospital to the dead patient Mampi Das.
