Agartala July 12, 2019 : The opposition CPI (M) have accused the ruling BJP cadres of forcing party candidates from 121 seats of three-tier Panchayat to withdraw from the July 27 elections. Describing the upcoming Panchayat elections as a 'farcical exercise' sources in the CPI (M) said that on the last day of withdrawal of candidature yesterday, armed BJP workers and supporters had forced CPI (M) candidates to withdraw from contest through threats and intimidations. 'Our apprehensions have come true and the election is being reduced to a farce' said sources in the CPI (M). They also lashed out at the passive role being played by the state election commissioner G.K.Rao who had not allow CPI (M) representatives to refer to past incidents and experiences in the first all Party meeting . As a result the CPI (M) representatives had been forced to walk out of that meeting.

Enumerating the seats from which withdrawal of candidature had been forced sources in the CPI (M) said that party's bona fide contenders had been forced to withdraw from 25 Zilla Parishad seats, 32 Panchayat Samity seats and 64 Gram Panchayat seats spread over the state. Most of the withdrawals had been reported from Belonia subdivision of south Tripura and Dhalai district. 'From the very beginning threats and intimidations had been used by BJP cadres to force withdrawal of our candidates but in many placed our party units overcame this and remained in the contest though in others this was not possible' sources in the CPI (M) said .

Reacting to allegations made by the CPI (M) the BJP state leadership said that the accusations were baseless and CPI (M) candidates had withdrawn from contest because of their total alienation from the people and consequent inevitable rejection by the electorate. 'There is no substance in these wild charges and we dismiss them as politically motivated propaganda' said a senior BJP leader.
